Journey of Pourquoi Pas began in 1976 which is situated within minutes of toronto centre of arts. A quaint little French Restaurant, Pourquoi Pas provides the romantic ambience perfect for a dinner for two or a quiet night out with friends. Dishes such as the braised rack of lamb in a rosemary sauce or the duck in a Grand Marnier sauce will delight your palate, as will the extensive wine list featuring reds such as the Mommessin Bourgogne Pinot Noir. Adding to the delightful ambience is a selection of art for sale from the Bordeaux region of France.more...See more text

A friend and I went for dinner (around 6:30pm) on a Monday night. The place was empty except for a few men in their 40's sitting on the patio - they appeared to be friends of the owner. The restaurant was small - a converted residential house.
The menu seemed to offer a lot of good choices, so we stayed. The cutlery and crockery ont eh table did not look very clean - the glasses had a film on them (like they didn't get fully clean int eh dishwasher). The water tasted a bit funny.
I ordered the Mouclade, my friend got to French Onion soup and Salade Pourquoi Pas (nothing else, the bill came to $35). All the dishes were bad to ok. The pasta did not have nearly enough sauce and there were too few mussels. The soup was not great. The salad was nothing special.
The service was slow after our dishes were brought to us. Not attentive. We had to wait a long time before the waiter brought us our bill. The moulade was shown as $12.95 on the menu and charged at $13.95. The soup was shown at $6.95 and charged at $7.95 and the salade was shown at $9.95 and charged at $10.95.
It was a very enjoyable and fun experience. My discussion of food ordered covers all the points. It is an overlooked restaurant with good food and prices that you should be going to for a mid-priced dinner with good French cuisine.
Our main criticism is as follows : the menu of Pourquoi Pas which appears in the Internet Website (of this restaurant) is totally different from the menu you can see at the restaurant ! And the prices are quite different too ! My wife had a dish whose cost is about $15 on the menu (Internet) and close to $30 on the menu at the restaurant !!! The food is so-so. I ordered a cassoulet and what I got was very remote from the true Cassoulet of Toulouse ! You have to ask bread again and again to get some. The table we got to sit at was against another door near the entrance and you get a draft of cold air while eating (thanks goodness it is not winter any more but the temperature today in Toronto was rather chilly !)- By and large we will not return to this restaurant as the price you pay is not relative to the quality you get.
